"There can be only two basic loves, the love of God unto the forgetfulness of self, or the love of self unto the forgetfulness of God."
- Augustine
This quote has stirred some deep places in me this week. Thoughts I look forward to sharing, but not just yet. Rather than rambling about me intimations, I'd like to hear from you. Is the battle really that simple? Are there merely two paths for the human soul to journey leading to two opposing destinations? Or is this an oversimplification? How do you see this expressed in your world?

Maybe it's not quite as black/white. If we are Gods creation, then it would seem that loving ourselves to some degree would be honoring to God. Maybe the "loving of self" could be better stated as willingly giving in to self.
Hey Jason, it's been a while. Glad to see your comments and as always they're appreciated.
So you feel it's not as much an either or as it is a question priority? What would giving into self in a Godly way look like?
The Creator is greater than the creation, while the creation is pretty great.
I guess I meant giving into your selfishness. I love me so I come first.
On the other side, Gods second command is Love your neighbor as you love yourself. So I can assume that there is something to loving yourself. I can related to God (my heavenly Father) in a way like, I wouldn't want my son to give himself up to be with me. I would want him to love who he is and be comfortable with himself. To go out and be all he can be. I would want him to say "I'm great. God is great. He made me in His image and He lives in me. So I must be great also." In that perspective of course.
